Whether you listen to music on vinyl, 8 track, cassette tape, CD or mp3, where would we be without it? How many times have you heard a song and it instantly takes you back to an exact moment in your past?
1. Never Been To Spain by Three Dog NightMy daddy had a heart problems and we knew he was living on borrowed time. A year before he passed, I had asked him about songs to play at the funeral. He mentioned a few and then I asked him about Never Been To Spain. I knew he liked the song and as long as I could remember, this is the only song I ever heard him sing. He never said yes or no but instead he started singing it. After the funeral I had several friends and family ask me why we played that song. They all told me that they had heard him sing that song over the years. It will always be special. He left us in 2008. I still have people tag me on Facebook when they hear the song. |
2. Amos Moses by Jerry ReedAmos Moses just makes me laugh. A huge plus is that it has a great funky beat and you just can’t help but dance when you hear it. |
3. The Weight by The BandI should have been born a generation earlier. I am a hippie at heart and The Weight is the ideal hippie anthem. Levon Helm was one of my favorite performers and the best drummer ever. If you get a chance, Levon has a great documentary on Netflix called Ain’t In It For My Health. I could watch it over and over. |
4. Me And Bobby McGee by Janis JoplinI would almost swear that I learned these songs in order: Jesus Loves Me, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Me and Bobby McGee. I can remember singing this song as far back as I can remember. I still think it’s as groovy now as I did then. |
5. Raspberry Beret by PrinceDue to copyright laws I cannot find this video anywhere! I’ve replaced it with a tribute band, Purple Knights. |
6. Amazing Grace by Celtic ThunderThis is one of the most touching songs I have ever heard. It is played at every funeral I have |
7. Chain of Fools by Aretha FranklinMy mom has always been a fan of Aretha Franklin. When I hear her it reminds me of my childhood. Chain of fools or Respect are songs that you have to sing and dance to. I love everything she does. |
8. Victory by Tech N9neI love the song and everyone thinks it is hilarious that I know all the words. This is close to being one of my all time favorites. |
9. Rambling Man by Waylon JenningsI’m not a fan of country music with the exception of older country. Willie, Waylon, Hank Jr., Merle Haggard, and George Jones. When I hear Rambling man it just moves something in me that makes me happy. I don’t know if it is that rhythm or the lyrics. It makes me wanna go to a honky tonk and line dance! |
10. Bohemian Rhapsody by QueenQueen! In my opinion, Freddie Mercury was the best tenor of all time. He could sing the ABC’s and I would be mesmerized. No one knows what this song is actually about. I have read that Freddie Mercury always wanted to compose and sing a ballad and so he wrote Bohemian Rhapsody. When we play it in the car, my daughter and I belt it out and play it at least twice. |
I’ve often thought about what the soundtrack to my life would sound like. I think the above list would sum it up pretty well. How about you? What are your favorite songs and why? Share them with me on Facebook.
